It was a week in which the performing arts took centre stage, and our hall turned by turns into a theatre, a cinema and a circus ring.
First came the puppet theatre. We had the privilege of hosting a company of actors who brought the magic of performance straight to us, and the children watched and took part in an interactive, educational play. Our thanks to the Zburdalici puppet theatre. For a child, a show seen close up is something else entirely from one watched on a screen: they see the hand moving the puppet and believe the story at the same time — two things that seem mutually exclusive and that, at this age, coexist perfectly.
Then we turned to cinema. We organised educational screenings and talked about the stories behind the cameras. The children discovered how much work and creativity lie behind a film — that there is no single author but dozens of people with different trades, and that what looks like one continuous scene was in fact shot in pieces.
The week did not stop there: we brought the circus to PlusKids, and the children became performers themselves. They learned acrobatics and tricks, made us laugh and marvel at once, and applause rang through the playroom. Beyond the fun, the circus calls for stage courage: doing in front of everyone something you have practised for ten minutes is no small thing.
As in every week, the children had two English lessons with our Cambridge CELTA-certified teacher.
