At the end of the school year we travelled with the children through Italy, Egypt, Romania and China, discovering the traditions, the food and the history of each country.
In Italy we learned about local traditions and enjoyed pizza and ice cream, while the children danced and sang traditional songs. In Egypt we explored ancient history, with the pyramids and the pharaohs — the topic that raises the most questions at any age, because so many of the answers are still unknown. In Romania we rediscovered our own traditions, with folk dances and folk songs, and talked about Romanian history and customs. And in China we closed the journey with a Chinese dessert and a traditional dance the children had prepared.
A show with four countries has an advantage an ordinary programme does not: every child finds something that fits them. One dances, another speaks a line, another looks after the set or explains to the audience where we are. Nobody is left on the sidelines, and the nerves of the stage are shared out across several moments, which makes them far easier to carry.
Behind an afternoon like this lie weeks of rehearsal, of costumes fitted, of lines learned and of patience. The children put their hearts into every part of it, and the result was theirs.
