STEAM week began spectacularly.
On Monday we explored the states of matter in a delicious way: the children learned about solid, liquid and gas by melting chocolate. We turned theory into fun and flavour, making fruit skewers with melted chocolate together. The change from solid to liquid and back happened before their eyes in a matter of minutes, and the question "where did the heat go?" came from them, not from us.
On Tuesday we entered the world of electricity. We built simple circuits, lit bulbs and discovered how energy travels and brings things to life. The moment the bulb lights for the first time, after a child has connected the wires themselves, is one of the few moments when you can actually see on someone's face that they have just understood something. We also worked with circuits that did not work — deliberately — so they could hunt down the break themselves.
At PlusKids, children learn through hands-on experience, play and discovery.
