Did you know that every week our children eat more than thirty kilos of fruit?
It is a figure that really says something about habits. Fruit reaches children not because they are told to eat healthily, but because it is there, peeled and cut, at the hour when they are hungry. A whole apple left in a school bag usually comes back home; the same apple sliced and set on the table, among classmates who are eating too, disappears within minutes.
That is what the after-school snack does: it turns a good intention into a routine that no longer needs negotiating.
