It was one of those days when the story does not stay on the page but ends up on the table.
We read and retold the much-loved tale of "The Giant Turnip". It is a short text with a structure children grasp at once: everyone tries alone, nobody succeeds, and the result only comes when they all pull together. That is exactly what we talked about — cooperation, patience, and how much help offered at the right moment is worth. We also looked at how the story is built: who the characters are, the order in which they appear, what repeats and why that very repetition makes it so easy to remember.
Then we got to work. Taking our cue from the story, we made a vegetable salad together, with radishes, naturally, in the leading role. The children washed, sorted, counted and mixed, each with their own task. It is the sort of activity where more is learned than meets the eye: fine motor skills and teamwork are practised, the names of vegetables and their place in a healthy diet are learned, and at the end the link between the effort put in and the result on the plate is plain to see.
They ate it with a pleasure no conversation about vegetables could ever have produced. When you have cut the radish yourself, it tastes different.
It was a day in which reading, creativity and good taste came together naturally — and the children's smiles were the best proof that it was worth it.
