The 2024 edition of the PlusKids Summer School ran across the whole of the long holiday and was built around ten themed weeks.
Splitting it into weeks is not a matter of presentation. A holiday of nearly three months is too long for a single thread, and the children do not all come on the same days: some go to their grandparents, others to the seaside. A week with a theme of its own works both on its own and as part of a longer path, so that a child who comes only once leaves with something whole rather than a fragment of an unfinished project.
Each week brought together creative themed activities, outings and interactive workshops for building skills. But we also kept the less spectacular, necessary part: doing the holiday homework, along with revision and catch-up work. It is the reason many parents choose a summer programme over a holiday spent entirely at home — at the start of September you can tell at once who has opened their exercise book.
Cambridge English lessons were part of the programme twice a week, taught by a CELTA-certified teacher, in an interactive format designed for the holidays rather than the classroom.
Boring? Not in the slightest. Fun? Absolutely. That, in short, was the promise of summer 2024, and the weeks that followed looked exactly like it.
