The first week of Summer School was one of journeys — first on the map, then in the imagination.
The children explored various means of transport and learned about the compass points and finding their bearings. It is one of those ideas that seem simple until you have to use them: saying where north is in an unfamiliar room takes rather more than memorising four words. So we practised on concrete things, with directions given and followed.
We then discovered the story of Christopher Columbus and travelled in our imagination to exotic destinations, where we found out how writing works in other countries. Children who have only just mastered their own alphabet are astonished to see that there are scripts without letters like ours, or that are read in a different direction — it is the first proof that the world is bigger than their classroom.
We learned about urban and rural settlements, and then each child drew their own map. Drawing a map is the exercise that ties everything together: to draw one, you must have understood what a direction is, what a distance is, and what belongs on a map and what does not.
We also learned about the traditions of Mexico, and the week ended with a themed party.
Experiences like these feed natural curiosity and develop critical thinking and problem solving, as well as collaboration and teamwork. The English sessions, taught by a CELTA-certified teacher, are matched to the children's age and leave them feeling confident and eager to learn.
