"Spring is coming, spring is coming, / spreading over all the land, / little flowers in the meadows, / come and gather them, children..." These are the verses that open the first day of March with us, year after year.
Poetry learned by heart has a poor reputation, but at this age it works in the child's favour: rhythm and rhyme make the text easy to hold on to, and what is remembered effortlessly is then spoken with pleasure. A child reciting gets to practise exactly the hard things — speaking loudly, clearly, in front of others, without rushing. And the old-fashioned words in the text always lead to a conversation about what each one means.
Spring is the season of rebirth: the whole of nature comes back to life, and the change is visible from one day to the next, which makes it the most suitable subject of observation for children. Snowdrops, the first to appear, are the clearest lesson in courage and in patience.
We also talked about the mărțișor, the custom with which we open the month and which we wear as a token of good wishes for the person we give it to.
