Don't you miss the summer days spent at your grandparents' in the countryside?
Week seven at PlusKids took us to the farm, just like at grandparents' in the country. We milked the cow, learned about animals and vegetables, planted cabbage, got to know the farm machinery and had fun with a little maths game.
Farm work is almost unknown territory for today's children, and that makes it all the more valuable. A child who has milked once, even on a model, understands for good that milk does not come out of a carton, and one who has put a cabbage seedling into the soil will look at their plate differently. The link between effort and food cannot be taught in words.
The surprise of the week was Bulgăraș, a very charming little rabbit who delighted the children with his presence. A live animal in the middle of the group brings a more serious side with it: you sit still, you speak softly, you touch gently. These are rules children keep without protest, because the reason for them is plain to see.
The week is not over yet: the children will learn more about organic crops and, on Friday, will enjoy a coach trip to the Animal Farm.
A few weeks of the Summer School programme remain, and the best team of teachers is waiting for the children with education through fun.
