In the third week of the PlusKids Summer School, given over to dream jobs, the little ones discovered one of the most beloved of them all: being a doctor.
We found out what a physician does on an ordinary day, which instruments they use and what each one is for — from the stethoscope that listens to a heartbeat to the thermometer and the first aid kit. The children held them, tried them out on one another, and understood far faster that way than from any diagram.
Then we talked about the part that concerns all of us: why our health is worth looking after. About washing hands, about sleep, about moving, and about what it means to tell a grown-up when something hurts. These are simple things, but a child remembers them differently after wearing a white coat, even in play.
Role play did the rest. When the surgery moves into the classroom, children practise new vocabulary, clear speech and the patience of waiting their turn without noticing — and above all empathy, because a good doctor begins by listening.
