In the fourth week of Summer School we made our longest journey yet: we travelled through time, from the very beginning to beyond the present day.
We set off from the Stone Age. We discovered how the first people lived, how they found shelter and food, what tools they used and why the discovery of fire changed everything. These things seem very far removed from an ordinary summer day, but they gave the children exactly what they needed: a sense of scale. Once you understand how far back something happened, you start to understand what "long ago" really means.
Then we stepped into the world of the dinosaurs, which is, year after year, the theme that lights curiosity fastest. We talked about herbivores and carnivores, about sizes that are hard to picture and about what fossils tell us. The children asked questions you cannot answer from memory — the surest sign that a topic has truly caught them.
The journey did not stop there. We carried on into the future, exploring robots, inventions and technology, and talked about how a job changes when a machine appears that can do it. It is a serious conversation, but at their age it is carried lightly.
It was a week full of discoveries, creative work and games, in which imagination worked as hard as memory. At PlusKids, learning really does become an adventure when a single thread ties the days together.
