A few days ago we celebrated Harvest Day with great delight, an event awaited by children and teachers alike. The whole yard was set up with several workshops.
We started with a pickling workshop, in which the children took an active part and learned the autumn vegetables. It is the kind of activity that stays with you for life: things are touched, smelled and counted, and at the end there is a jar that needs a few weeks before it is ready. The waiting is part of the lesson.
We carried the week on with an interactive workshop about landforms, in which the children used charts to identify various kinds of trees. Relief is among the first geography topics for which a map alone is not enough — hill, mountain, plain and valley are far better understood when they are built, touched and compared.
World Heart Day did not pass unnoticed either, and we marked it with a painting workshop. In their English lessons the children made a family tree and learned new words — family vocabulary is among the easiest to fix, because every child is talking about their own.
We closed the week by taking part in Researchers' Night, ReCoNnect Măgurele. For children growing up next to a research campus, an evening spent among scientists and experiments is not just another outing but an encounter with something that could, one day, be theirs.
