Today is World Water Day — a fitting moment to remind ourselves how valuable water is and what an essential role it plays in our lives.
The teachers at PlusKids gave the children the information they need in order to understand and protect the environment, water resources included. The difficulty, at their age, is that water seems limitless: it runs from the tap whenever you like, in any quantity. So we worked with measurable examples — how much is lost while you brush your teeth with the tap running, what that adds up to in a week, in a year, across a whole block of flats.
Through hands-on activities, games and experiments, the children learned to save water, to prevent pollution and to build a responsible attitude towards the environment. Water experiments have one advantage: you see the result at once. A glass of water clouded by a few drops of oil says more about pollution than an hour of explanation, especially when the next question is "and how do we clean it now?".
