At the start of August we marked World Watermelon Day at Summer School.
It is the sort of small celebration that fits a hot summer day perfectly: it needs no preparation, it is shared out between activities and it gathers the whole group around the same table. The cold slices vanished quickly, and the good mood lasted far longer than the snack itself.
Moments like this have their place in a long day spent together. They break up the programme, give the children a reason to come together, and leave behind photographs we are glad to look at years later.
