Earth Day is a day for celebrating nature, the green and the blue of the sky, the birds, the flowers and everything around us.
On 22 April we suggested a simple activity to do outdoors with the little ones: a nature treasure hunt. The idea could not be simpler — the child gets a list of things to find and sets off looking for them in the yard, in the park or along the roadside.
It works better than any conversation about the environment, for three reasons. First: it forces you to observe. To find what you have been asked for, you have to look closely at things you have walked past until now without seeing. Second: it costs nothing and needs no preparation. Third: it can be repeated any time, and the list looks different each time, because nature does too.
And what remains at the end is the very idea the day exists for: caring for the planet does not begin with grand gestures but with the habit of noticing what is around you and giving it value.
