Our young reporters stepped, a little nervously, into the role of news presenters, in a day devoted to information, self-expression and creativity.
We started with history: how television came about, what the first black-and-white broadcasts looked like, and how much has changed on the way to today's colour screens and news bulletins. For children, the idea that there was once a single channel and a two-colour picture is almost as exotic as their grandparents' stories — which is exactly why it sticks.
Then each child chose a news item and presented it to the others, in a simple, clear format everyone could follow. It is not an easy exercise: you have to understand what you are reading before you can put it in your own words, you have to look at your audience rather than at the page, you have to breathe where the comma is.
Through this activity the children practise speaking clearly and confidently in front of a group, reading with intonation and correct diction, critical thinking and curiosity about the world around them. We also talked about why it matters that information should be accurate and checked — a conversation that, at their age, starts simply: how do you know that what you are saying is true?
We had fun along the way too: we filmed, we laughed, we applauded and we cheered each other on. The children went home with a new experience, a good dose of confidence and, for some of them, a fresh dream: "when I grow up, I want to be a news presenter".
